Paperboard Packaging: Updates, Actions, and Opportunities
Donna will provide an update from the American Forest & Paper Association on the latest public and marketplace policies affecting the paperboard packaging industry. She’ll also share actions the industry can take in order to capitalize on opportunities ahead.
A recognized public policy expert for the pulp, paper, packaging, and wood manufacturing sectors, Donna has led the American Forest and Paper Association since 2007. She is a member of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization’s Steering Committee on Sustainable Forest Industries as well as the past President of the International Council of Forest and Paper Associations. She currently serves on the Anderson University (Indiana) Board of Trustees, the Business-Industry Political Action Committee Board of Directors, and is the Secretary-Treasurer of the Forest Products Industry National Labor Management Committee. Additionally, she has been recognized on RISI’s Top 50 Power List for the pulp and paper industry for several years in a row.

Linda is responsible for the strategic leadership and management of the $2 billion, Spokane, Washington-based Clearwater Paper. She was elected CEO in 2013 after serving as President and COO since 2011 and CFO beginning in 2008. Prior to her tenure at Clearwater, Linda worked in finance, corporate planning, and strategic consulting for several national firms, including Accenture and Bank of America. In total, she has accrued more than 25 years of experience in corporate finance and business strategy development. Linda is the chairwoman of the American Forest & Paper Association, and also serves on the Boards of Treehouse Foods Incorporated and Black Hills Corporation. Additionally, she is on the Board of Saint George’s School of Spokane and previously served on the Board of the YWCA of Spokane.
Ryan MacFarlane, supervisory special agent, Federal Bureau of Investigations
Prepare to Fail: A Different Approach to Cyber Security
There’s no doubt that cyber threats are on the rise. In fact, today it’s not a matter of if you’ll become the victim of a cyber attack, but when. In this timely presentation, Ryan will shed light on current cybersecurity trends and offer insight into the mindset of cyber criminals. He’ll show you how to evaluate risk, and ultimately, how to limit the impact of cyber attacks both at work and at home.
An FBI agent working in one of the Cleveland division’s cyber squads, Ryan investigates and pursues those responsible for highly complex, national-security-related computer crimes. He has investigated such cybercrimes at Google, RSA, and numerous defense contractors, typically performing malware analysis, incident response, and malicious network traffic analysis. Ryan started his career with the FBI in the Los Angeles Field Office, and later spent two years in Washington on the National Cyber Investigative Joint Task Force, which is a multi-agency cyber center that coordinates intelligence to counter global cyber threats. Before joining the FBI in 2004, he worked for IBM, i2 Technologies, and an internet security startup based in Atlanta.

The retail market is undergoing major change. Amazon has acquired Whole Foods. Walmart is partnering with Google. Millennials are playing a larger role in reshaping the marketplace. E-commerce sales, which have increased about 300% over the past ten years, are continuing to accelerate. In response, brand owners are pivoting in order to accommodate new market needs. During this session, Tom will illuminate these changes, discuss how the paperboard packaging industry has followed suit, and how you can stay one step ahead of the curve.
Tom has spent the past 23 years in procurement for consumer packaging. While working with some of the world’s most recognized brands—including McDonald’s and Morton Salt—he has visited numerous manufacturing facilities and led new packaging initiatives as well as crucial sustainability efforts. He has written for Packaging World and has appeared on Fox Business Network to discuss sustainability in packaging. Tom previously spoke at PPC’s 2010 Fall Meeting in Memphis, Tennessee.

A member of the Council on Foreign Relations, Jeff is a frequent commentator on global strategy and economic trends for CNN and other TV and news outlets. He has published numerous papers and books, and was selected by the Wall Street Journal as one of the 12 favorite professors of executive MBA programs worldwide.
Today’s marketplace is a stormy sea of economic and geopolitical changes, security threats, and new consumer preferences. And in the middle of it all is the modern business leader, trying to paddle ashore. For leaders in the packaging space, uncertain tides can be even more troubling, as unexpected changes to economic policies and growth can affect our industry more than others. Therefore, you need to set a strategic course and create contingency plans so you’ll be ready for the most likely scenarios.
To help you do just that, Jeff will highlight economic forecasts for key topics while discussing the risks and opportunities. He’ll address tax reform, the FED and interest rates, exchange rates, trade policy, and the job market. The session will be interactive, so come prepared with topics that interest you!
